June 7, 2011: Finance & Marketing Classroom Showcase

Finance Classroom Showcase
By Peeranat Phongphua

We got to know what ‘Finance’ is all about, what we do as finance people and what’s the benefit and tradeoff of working in finance field. Finance is about wealth maximization and all firms need finance.

Ajarn Sarayut explained us in details the possibilities of career paths. We also learnt about the three main possible career paths in finance field that are Corporate Finance, Investment, and Risk Management. Each requires different levels of mathematics. In finance, the competition is sky-high and since the market never stops trading, we can never stop working. Due to the amount of effort required and the stress involved, most finance people tended to retire earlier. Additionally, with high experiences gained throughout their career, they can become professors or consultants.

Ajarn Sarayut widened our view of the Finance world further more on career opportunities and the future threats that we will face if we have to work in finance. Besides the state banks, the ownership of all commercial banks in Thailand is majority owned by foreigners and only small portion own by Thais.

One of the main threats that Ajarn Sarayut reiterated us was about the Chi-x and the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC). In 2015, we are having the AEC. This means that our trade would be almost fully liberalized. In other words, ten countries within the AEC can trade without tax. As a result, there would be more foreigners working in Thailand and the jobs that are reserved for Thais might not last long. The competition will become very aggressive and will affects us extremely because the year implementing this is in the same year as BBA#20 graduates.

Another important factor that would affect us significantly is Chi-x. Chi-x is an alternative equity trading market. Recently, Chi-x has just signed a contract with Singapore. Under Singaporean Law, any firms cosign with them, it is considered to be Singaporean companies. As a result, in 2015 Chi-x will be able to trade within ASEAN countries with tax-free which will bring more competitiveness in the industry. This will provide us both a threat and an opportunity. It’s a good opportunity for us to take a big step and advancement in our career path. We will not only have a chance in the country, but we will also have more opportunity regionally and even globally.

“Things are not like what they appear to be” is what we learnt from the Marketing Showcase.  It was the first time we ever knew what marketing class is like in BBA Thammasat. It is interactive, full of energy and most importantly, fun. From the very first glance, people may reckon that Marketing is not worth paying attention to because by being a marketing expert, it may not be considered as a stable occupation as compared to accountant and financier.

Briefly, marketing is about being creative and capable of knowing what the consumers want and how to make the sales happen. In the session, we were taught to analyze the behaviors and the traits of different kinds of customers we could imagine. We then used them as marketing plans. Target group is one of the core essentials that fulfill marketing strategy. It is to target specifically ‘whom’ our products are meant for. Moreover, we learnt that packaging is very important; the attractiveness of products which would persuade customers to purchase also rely on these packaging regardless of what kind of goods they are. We acquired that there are so many kind of techniques that will make products become best-sellers. Although this was just only a showcase of what we would study in the next four years, we have already gained much knowledge just by attending this showcase. Imagine what our future would be like in the years to come.
